Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 during the largest silver strike in California.  With its 500 mines, Calico produced over $20 million in silver ore over a 12-year span.  When silver lost its value in the mid-1890's, Calico lost its population.  The miner's packed up, loaded their mules and moved away abandoning the town that once gave them a good living.  It became a ghost town.

Borates used to be transported across the Mojave Desert to the nearest rail spur by 20-mule teams.

Buried deep in the Mojave Desert is one of the biggest and richest deposits of borax on the planet.  Borates are minerals containing boron, the fifth element on Periodic Table.

Boron, CA has one of two world-class borate deposits on planet.  The huge open pit mine supplies nearly half the world's demand for industrial borates.

Lake Kaweah near Sequoia National Park

Most expensive camp site to date - $51/night (wow).  Beautiful location on the Kaweah River.....but no wireless service, so we had to cut the trip short!

Still on the 40!
