McDonald-Dunn Research Forest Hike (Corvallis, OR)

"Did you say we were going on a hike?  In the cold and possibly the rain?  I'm sorry, today's my day to stay home and snuggle in my blankets."

The McDonald-Dunn Research Forest consists of approximately 11,250 acres of predominantly forested land on the western edge of the Willamette Valley in Oregon, and on the eastern foothills of the Coast Range.
"Okay, this is better than walking 5 miles in the mud."

All of that rain in the Pacific Northwest leaves everything a brilliant green.

Quote after our first 50 yards into the hike from a Thompson family member not to be identified, "You remembered to bring the roll of toilet paper, right?"

Section 36 Loop Trail begins and ends at the Forestry Club Cabin, and climbs 580 feet. This 3.3 mile trail takes hikers through old forest and research plots, peaceful Cronemiller lake, and beautiful views of the surrounding area. Powder House Trail is a 1 mile extension of the Section 36 Loop Trail, and takes hikers up to a fantastic viewpoint of the Soap Creek Valley.  Highlights include views of Soap Creek Valley and a stroll along Cronemiller Lake.
Steep initial ascent up the mountain

Still a steep climb

Tinker enjoying the view.  Of her eyelids.

Our only wildlife sighting.  A massive slug.

Really cool elephant trunk tree

Each ring represents one year's growth.  Growth rings are wider when weather conditions in a given year are favorable and thinner in times of poor growing conditions like a drought year.

Very peaceful and quiet

False Lily of the Valley (aka Wild Lily of the Valley) is an herb related to ginger.

"Ross, just peek in there......"

"Yeah, I hiked this whole trail"

"Okay, great, we've had our 'fun', now let's get back to resting."
